Headache Q & A

Why do I get headaches?

While you may believe your headaches are brought on by your teenager’s blasting stereo, or because you’re stressed out at work or overly tired, most headaches start with tensed neck and shoulder muscles. The tight muscles throw your neck vertebrae out of alignment — a state known as subluxation — which irritates your nerves and causes pain.

Researchers estimate that 80% of headaches originate in the neck. These headaches are called cervicogenic (or “neck origin”) headaches. Cervicogenic headaches are considered primary headaches, which means that no underlying disease or condition contributes to the pain.

Rarer are secondary headaches, which are a consequence of an underlying medical problem. Secondary headaches may arise from fever, infection, high blood pressure, trauma, stroke, and other conditions.

What is a migraine headache?

Migraine headaches are characterized by intense, pulsing pain in just one area of the head. Migraines are always accompanied by at least one other symptom, such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light or sound. You must suffer at least five attacks lasting from four to 72 hours without treatment to be diagnosed as having migraines.

Does spinal misalignment cause migraines, too?

Researchers have not yet determined what causes migraines, though genetics is probably involved. If you get migraine headaches, you may have a subluxation of the spine or jaw as a complicating factor.

How can chiropractors treat headaches?

Dr. Rossello alleviates the pain of headaches and migraines with chiropractic adjustments that correct subluxation. When all of the vertebrae in the spine are aligned, your body functions more harmoniously and efficiently.

A properly aligned spine alleviates pressure on impinged nerves and relieves pain. Even secondary migraine symptoms can disappear or lessen after Dr. Rossello corrects your subluxation.

In addition to relieving your pain through adjustments, massage, and electrical stimulation, if necessary, Dr. Rossello helps you nourish and strengthen your spinal tissues with nutrition. She can also design a diet that helps you avoid foods and chemicals that may trigger your headaches or migraines.

If you’d like a natural way to alleviate your headaches or migraines while simultaneously building a stronger and healthier body, call Dr. Rossello in her Bowie, Maryland office. Her helpful staff is ready to take your phone call, or you can simply book your own appointment online.
